Sue's Corrado

Part 2 - What's been going on with the engine and body

Engine Work:

May 17: cut head
May 18: lapped intake valves into head - still waiting for exhaust valves and oversized pistons to come in.

July 26: Oversized Mahle Pistons, exhaust valves, and some other engine parts and hoses finally arrived!!
Aug. 6: Blasted engine block.
Aug. 12: finished blasting block, primed it. Brought block and pistons to the machine shop for surfacing and boring.
Sept. 22: Brought flywheel, crankshaft and a few other pieces to machine shop for engine balance.
Sept. 24: Removed exhaust, gas tank, fuel pump and filter, housing.
Sept. 25: Blasted and painted gas tank straps and fuel pump housing brackets.
Oct. : Picked up flywheel, block, crank, cam, pistons, etc. from machine shop ... looks good!
Nov. 18: Received new Autotech 260 cam and adjustable cam gear

On to the Body:

April 28: ordered Rieger grille/hood spoiler combo
May 14: removed pass side mirror, headliner, antenna, rear spoiler, blasted and painted the two brackets that hold to the spoiler

May 15: removed right rear tire to keep from getting overspray on it - was rusted on pretty good. Took a look at the rear subframe - pretty rusty with chunks of rust falling off of it. I think another one might have to be put up in there.
May 21: I found a moonroof out of a '96 Passat - took everything apart down to getting the headliner out - I'm going to wait until the car is about to be painted to take that sunroof out and do the swap.
June 1: The Rieger grill/hood spoiler combo I ordered finally came today FedEx. Looks good - we just need to prep it and paint it - all red I'm thinking.
June 5: I was given a rear sub frame from a '91 GTI that will be blasted and possibly powder-coated. It's in much better condition than the one on the C I think. Thanks Chris.
July 23: Rear subframe out of the GTI blasted and primed.

July 29: Blasted 2 subframe brackets and bolts and primed them.
Aug. 14: Painted bolts and nuts from subframe.
Aug. 20: Straightened both front fenders where they were damaged in the very front.

Here are some pics of underneath the car...I didn't have a chance to jack it up, but you can see some of the rust under there that will be taken care of.

Sept. 4: Moved the Corrado into a working position. Removed left rear wheel (with a little pulling and tugging) and put the spare on.
Sept. 16: Took front subframe apart. I started blasting it, but decided to have it done - it was taking way too long. Blasted and painted brackets that attach the 2 pieces of the front subframe.
Sept 23: Started sanding right rear quarter panel. Removed gas tank filler door and sanded it.

Now that we're up to date, look for future installments on the progress of Sue's Corrado.  Stay tuned...
