My apologies to everyone for being so slow to update you on the Scirocco.
Life does get a little busy, but that can't stand in the way of a good
project forever! So, on to the update:
One of the things I had definitely planned to do was to
upgrade
those
13" rims to something a bit nicer that would also improve
the handling and feel of the car. I wanted
something that would be different from everything out there - not a 5-star
wheel, or a BBS knock-off, but something, well, something else! I found that
something else in a set of Saturn 15x6 rims. They have no logo on them, the
offset is 1mm different from VW's and the hub was
the same size. I got a great deal on them, as well as on a
new
set of tires for them. The tires are a set of Kumho Ecsta's that aren't high
performance, but look good, hold the car to the road well, are very quiet,
and didn't break the bank.
The other install I was able to make happen since the last update was the
seating in the car. I love the height adjustableness of the Scirocco seats,
but these things were ratty and smelled badly of mothballs. I opted for a
set of leather Corrado front seats. They too are height adjustable, in fact
a little more adjustable than the Scirocco ones, so I get a little more
headroom - a must when you are 6'2". I simply unbolted all the Corrado
seatbelts and installed my Scirocco ones on, slid them into the tracks, and
was in business.
Lastly, I have an update on future plans for the car. I had originally
wanted to keep the engine swap very simple - go from the 1.6 to the 1.8 8v
motor. I have since acquired a 2.0 16v motor with harness & ECU, so that
will be the new powerplant. I also was able to find a great set of coilovers
for the Scirocco, so the suspension will be almost infinitely adjustable.
They'll also make the new wheel & tire combo look better in the wheel wells.
Lastly, I was able to get my hands on a Zender sideskirt kit and rear hatch
spoiler, so things can be enhanced in the looks department.
