Project number four: a
1980 Scirocco owned by WASSERWERKS member, Mark Bednarz. Mark purchased this
car the end of July, 2006. It was an E-Bay purchase and the price was right,
especially for a car with such a rust-free shell. The car started off life
in California and lived there happily until 2003 when it moved to Texas.
There it spent a few more years and then moved on to New England in 2005
where it fell into the hands of the person Mark bought it from. When asked
why this car, Mark said “the old Scirocco body style is a classic one and
finding one in this condition meant having to take it home. It does need
some things, but that’s not a big deal. It’s clean enough to keep, but not
unique enough not to modify. Anything that breaks will get aftermarket or
performance stuff.”
Plans for the car include
upgrading the motor to something beyond the stock 1.6l that is presently in
the car. The exhaust system is on its way out, so that will gain from the
aftermarket world. The suspension on the car is quite spongy, so the
prospects of an economical yet performance oriented spring/strut replacement
will occur. The interior will also get a facelift.
The seat fabric is shot and the foam within the seats crunches to the touch. The dashboard
has cracks you could store fingers in, and the whole interior smells of
mothballs. Wheels will also more than likely be upsized, possibly with
something stock but time will tell.
The body will not likely see much work as it is fairly straight, but a front
spoiler would not be ruled out of the equation.
The basic goal is to turn
this into a great handling go-fast car that can be enjoyed for a majority of
the year. Something that could go to either a show or an autocross event and
be happy in both. |
