After
Aimee and I purchased our first home in November 2004, we recognized a need
for a vehicle to use on the weekends for the many runs we’ll be making to
the home improvement center, bulky waste, etc. The idea of having a spare
vehicle available, in case one of our TDIs needed to go in for service, also
appealed to us.
When our
search started, my goal was to find an old pick up truck; perhaps a mid-60’s
Chevrolet or a late-60’s to mid-70’s International Harvester ˝ ton 2 wheel
drive pick up. Nothing too heavy duty, but big enough to hold lumber or
mulch, or whatever we threw at it. A first generation Golf/Jetta based pick
up was not even on the radar…until we found a deal too good to pass up.
Club member and Connecticut Volkswagen Association president Jeremy Clayton
posted a “for sale” ad on the club Yahoo! Group for a 1981 Volkswagen Diesel
pick up, priced for quick sale at $800. After asking a couple questions,
Jeremy and I met up on a rainy Saturday morning to go have a look. |

What we found was a Mojave beige truck in, with
the exception of a couple rusty spots, generally good original condition.
When it fired right up and idled, I was sold. Traded some money for some
paperwork, and we were off to register and insure the truck, so I could pick
it up the following Wednesday. Once we get it home, we’ll give it more
thorough evaluation and prioritize the list of
things to do to the truck, so that we can maximize its availability to us
this summer. Next up is Part 1; the trip home and our first detailed look
at what will become WASSERWERKS latest project. |
